My daughter was having difficulties with fractions mid school year. So, every time we had something food wise to do with fractions--I would ask her what is was--like 2/ 3 of a pie--or 1/8 of a pizza--I would even go as far to break them down. If there was 2/4 left--I would have her look at it and tell me what else it could be--she picked it up immediately.

I think sometimes--they just need more than what a book can give them to learn.

In my sons first grade class, they used pictures of shapes that were divided into fractions.   We also had to cut pictures out of magazines that could be folded into 1/2's and 1/4's easily.   He did quite well with that.   I wish they had done more of that when I was in school because I found fractions to be really hard.

The pie and pizza for fractions is a really good idea....a great visual tool....and tasty too

Great thinking Sweet..  I love it when you can teach kids from everyday life.  We did a lot of teaching through baking-  1/2 cup-- I'd say get the 3/6 cup- lol.... My daughter would say- silly mom- that is 1/2

Yep, fraction is a tough one especially for those young kids. I am all the way in for using real life example in teaching them. If it is being done on paper, the kids wouldn't get it.It is just too complicated for them as they cannot imagine how fraction works .

I know what you mean.  Fractions is one of the first topics in grade school that produces a certain dislike and fear in the classroom. 

I like to place the following data on the board:

A fraction = (part)/(whole)

A fraction has two parts: (numerator)/(denominator)

I then go on from there using visuals to help students see what fractions can do outside the notebook.

I love sweetvtmom's tip about practicing fractions with food. Another great way to practice fractions is in the kitchen - while making dinner, ask your child to help you measure ingredients. Ask, "can you use this 1/4 cup to get measure 1 cup of milk?” or “I need 1/4 cup of butter, and this stick is marked in Tablespoons. How many Tablespoons do I need?” This helps kids practice fractions, comparisons and measurement terms.

Once your child is a pro, try switching it up - If you need 1 cup of flour, have your child add 1/2 cup, then ask him to finish using 1/4 cup measurements. Once he’s measured 3/4 cup of flour, ask him to finish using Tablespoon measures. The possibilities are endless!
