First, think about a topic you want to write about for your Research Paper (our third unit). The Research Paper will address a significant issue in our society and propose a feasible solution to the issue, or an aspect of the issue. The solution will be small scale as it should be feasible, but as ethical writers, researchers, and communicators, it is our responsibility to consider our role in our communities and how we can use our skills to help those around us.
Second, think of a research question or two that helps you determine the problem and focus of the Prospectus and Research Paper. For example, if your topic is nursing home abuse, a research question might be “On how large of a scale does this occur and what can help mitigate such an occurrence?” and “How does this affect the individuals residing there?”. You want your question to be complex, something more than just a yes or no answer that would require some investigation and evidence. By asking these questions, you’ve given your topic some significance and you’ve given yourself a direction to go and a framework to build off of.
Third, think of some questions you might want to explore about your topic to guide your research & focus. These should also be complex to give you more to work with and develop. For example, for the nursing homes abuse topic, some questions you may want to ask and research about are: “Why is this happening?”; “What areas have higher percentages of this occurrence?”; “What can help curb this behavior?”; “What other options are there?”; “What are the screening procedures like for employees?”; etc.
Lastly, take these three things and organize them into a visual map of some sort (cluster map, flow chart, mood board, etc.). You can use this website for some ideas:
