As you read in chapter 23, Shiva is one of the principle deities of Hinduism. Although Shiva is understood as the destroyer, he takes on a variety of forms each expressing different aspects or qualities.
Below are two different manifestations of Shiva. The image on the left is Shiva as Lord of Dance (Nataraja (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nataraja) ). In this form, Shiva gives expression to endless motion as he dances within the cosmic circle of fire through an endless cycle of destruction and creation. The image on the right is Shiva as Vanquisher of the Three Cities (Tripuravijaya (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripurantaka) ). In this form, Shiva gives expression to heroism as he is the supreme victor. In this legend, Shiva destroys three mythical cities that are plagued by demons and restores order.
