In this assignment, you will be asked to find a linear equation based on the nutritional information of food served at a restaurant. You will analyze the equation as it relates to the variables and transformations presented in the activity.

Instructions: Complete the steps outlined below, and answer parts A-G. Save all of your work to this template and submit it in Blackboard for grading.

STEP 1: Follow the directions below to create your data set, or click here to watch a video on how to create your data set. Click here for the transcript of this video.

· Go to http://menustat.org/#/home.

· Select one food category, one restaurant, and the most recent year from the drop-down menus on the screen. Make sure that the restaurant you selected has menu items in the food category you selected.

· In the “Nutrients” menu, select “Calories” and “Total Fat.”

· Press “Search.”

· Select four items from the chart. If you do not have at least four items in your chart, select a different restaurant or food category and create a new chart. You should have at least two different ordered pairs in your data set. If all four of the ordered pairs are the same, please select different food items.

A. Use the four items you selected above to complete the chart.

(Total Fat, Calories)

B. Based on the ordered pairs you selected, is the relation a function? Why or why not?

STEP 2: Identify the two outer most points. List the corresponding ordered pairs below:

· Point One – What ordered pair has the smallest x-value?

· Point Two – What ordered pair has the largest x-value?

C. Calculate the slope between the two outer most points. Round your answer to four decimal places.

Show each step of your work. A template is listed below to assist you. Replace the “?” with the appropriate numbers.

D. What is the linear equation in slope-intercept form ()?

Show each step of your work. Use the decimal value found in part C for the slope (), the point-slope formula listed below, and only one point identified in step 2 to find the slope-intercept form of the equation. Round your value for and to four decimal places.

E. Indicate whether the line in Part D rises, falls, is horizontal, or is vertical.

a. The line rises from left to right.

b. The line falls from left to right.

c. The line is horizontal.

d. The line is vertical.

The correct answer is choice _____.

F. Based on your answer for Part E, describe the relationship between Total Fat (x) and Calories (y). In other words, when total fat increases, what happens to the calories?

G. Assume that the graph of your equation is reflected about the y-axis. How do your x-coordinates and y-coordinates change? Does this change make sense in relation to total fat and calories? Why or why not?
