Diagnostic Essay: My Relationship to Music
Who: You will write a reflective essay examining your relationship to music.
What: Write a 500 word essay, examining your relationship to music. It must be done in Microsoft Word, double-spaced, and formatted according to MLA style. It is worth 25 points and will be graded according to the departmental grading rubric (see the grading folder in course documents). Essays not meeting the word count, will not receive a passing grade.
You may NOT use any outside sources for this assignment; if you do, you will receive a ZERO on the assignment. Also, you may NOT write this essay in 2nd person. Failure to comply to this rule will result in a severely low grade.
Here is a list of questions that you can use to generate your essay response:
1. What is your favorite/least favorite artist? Why?
2. What is your favorite/least favorite song? Why?
3. What is your favorite/least favorite musical genre? Why?
4. How often do you listen to music? Where do you listen? With whom do you listen?
5. Have your musical tastes changed throughout the years? Explain.
6. Do you and your friends share the same musical taste? Explain.
7. Is similar taste in music a “deal breaker” in terms of friendships or relationships? Explain.
You are welcome to answer as many of these questions as you find relevant and that you are able to build into a cohesive response. In your introductory paragraph, provide one solid claim that you will support with evidence throughout your essay. For example: “although my friends love the genre of popular music, I strongly dislike the popular music genre because”¦” and then proceed to outline the reasons you dislike popular music that you will discuss in detail in your body paragraphs. When writing your conclusion, reiterate your original thesis statement and evidence and then consider any new insights you reached in the process of writing this essay.
Why: Writing this reflective essay will help you practice writing in the reflective genre, which we will use heavily this semester.
