Planning Issue Article Review (Individual Assignment) – 10 Points
For this assignment, you will review one current newspaper or magazine articles focusing on planning problems, issues or events in southern California. The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you with the ongoing and frequently controversial nature of city planning. Papers should be 12-point font, double spaced, with 1-inch margins and 2 to 3 pages in length. Attach the article you review with your assignment.
Here are some guidelines and suggestions for your review:
1. Article selection. Choose in-depth longer articles, if possible. Recommended sources include the Los Angeles Times (Orange County section or Metro section), the Orange County Register, and Planning magazine. All of these are available the UCI Library.

2. Analysis. Give an analysis of all or some of the following, as each pertains to the selected article:
A. The issue covered in the article and the type of planning is involved (e.g., land use, housing, environmental, transportation, economic development, etc.).
B. The scope of the issue/problem (e.g., does the issue/problem pertain to a neighborhood, town or city, or regional, state, or national population).
C. The major participants in the planning issue (e.g., Is more than one government or agency involved in the issue? What role do citizens have in this issue? Is the atmosphere one of coordination or antagonism between the participants?)
D. The tools and techniques available to planners in dealing with the planning problem/issue.
E. The temporal context (e.g., are planners addressing a problem not yet materialized or a problem already at hand?)
F. The policy context surrounding the planning issue (e.g., is a particular public policy described as the cause or remedy to the problem?)
G. The predicted outcome of the planning problem based on the nature and magnitude of the issue and the participants involved (e.g., do you expect a particular plan to be delayed or move forward? Do you assume there will be backlash or support by specific interest groups or by the public?). Support your prediction as best you can.
