MSUM Speech and Language Disorder in Children Questions
Question Description
The first assigned MCN video is a treatment session with Jackson. Jackson long-term goal is to improve his speech intelligibility (being understood when speaking in all situations), with emphasis on the /r/ and /l/ sounds. He also works on some language goals and you may work on both areas. This is a fairly structured, clinician directed session (versus client directed). Our focus is not to discuss the treatment methods at this point but try to align our Speech Sound Disorder definitions with what you are seeing. Where does he fit?
After you watch, answer the following questions within MCN it will sent me a notice once you have submitted.
Describe the nature of this client’s speech sound disorder? (Explain)
Do you think the therapy activities were developmentally appropriate (Explain)
Did the clinician adapt to unexpected changes during therapy (Explain)
What did you learn or find interesting from this example (Explain)
For the 2nd video you will watch Kaitlyn who is 8 years old. She has a frontal lisp on /s/ and /z/ sound. Her therapy is structured using drill and conversational practice. This is a later stage of therapy when “carry over” or “generalization” to everyday conversation is a goal. Complete an observation report when completed and consider how her “speech sound disorder” is similar or different than Jackson’s.
