SNHU Areas of Interest and Practical Applications in Cognitive Psychology Discussion
Brainstorm some potential ideas for your final project (RUBRIC ATTACHED). What areas of cognitive psychology interest you the most (attention, learning, memory, language or decision making)? What applied setting is of interest to you or important for your future career (education, law, mental health, or technology)? Also, consider some of the potential cognitive problems in your area that you think further research and study in cognitive processes may be able to help solve.

STUDENT ONE:
The area I am considering is that of decision making.
The applied settings I’m going back and forth with are law and the mental health field. I’m highly interested in serial killers and crime and think it could be interesting to look into the decision making processes of historical big name criminals and see if theres been any research on their brain development or interviews asking about their thought process. It could also be interesting to look into the mental health realm though and see if there’s research done on how certain disorders effect our decisions; schizophrenia and severe OCD for example.
STUDENT TWO:
Good morning class!
The areas of cognitive psychology that interests me the most are attention and memory.
The applied settings that I am most interested in is education and the mental health field. I have not decided which path I feel more confident writing about. I mentioned in my introduction in the getting started discussion that I have three children (two of which have ADHD and other learning/behavioral disabilities). My future career path is in school psychology within the military community. There is a lack of services available to children in a school setting and even more so in the military community. Personally, I have seen the amount of children diagnosed with behavioral and learning disabilities increase over the years. Many schools (educators) are still not experienced in teaching or dealing with these issues. Cognitive problems, such as attention, stay the same or get worse for children if not treated. I think there is a need for more research as to why we are seeing an increase in these problems. There is also a need for more research in programs to treat attention disorders. My seven year old son is getting ready to start a program this summer to help control his inattentiveness and help him function better at school. If I chose attention in an educational field, I would love to utilize this information in my final project.
The other area of memory in the mental health field, is also something that interests me. On a personal note, I was officially diagnosed with MS four years ago. One of the biggest issues with this disease is cognitive impairment. It can be anything from learning and memory, attention, concentration and mental speed, problem solving. and word finding. I am blessed that these don’t affect me too seriously. MS is still very new to me and there isn’t a whole lot of research out there. I am working with a therapist to get a baseline of my cognitive abilities to allow me to see progression or digression of my abilities over the years. I would also utilize this information in my final project if I choose this area.
