ADV263 SNHU Relationship Between Creativity and Strategy Discussion
Question Description
Based on the lecture and resources in this module, consider the relationship between creativity and strategy. Traditionally, strategy might be seen as a more “left brain” or logical and analytic, whereas creativity is often associated with being a “right brain” cognitive function. Is this a fair and justified distinction? Is it really that simple? How do we, as advertisers, marry the two to achieve our objectives? Be sure to support your position with examples.

I really hope I am going in the right direction with this so here goes. The first thing that comes to mind is when I was in middle school in art class which is a strong builder of creativity and imagination, my teacher had us use the “left side” of our brain in drawing a portrait. We all picked our own image to use and we were instructed to flip the image upside down and draw it. This was difficult because we are used to drawing things and looking at things from the “right” side up which is using our “right side” of our brains in order to view an image. When we were done we flipped it back the way it supposed to be to see what we have done. This has to be the same with creativity and strategy. We use our creative side in advertising to create an idea that will work best for the product or companies success, with that comes strategy. Strategy is trying to construct it the best way possible and make sure there aren’t any setbacks or issues then or in the future. We see things in the perspective of advertisers but we must see it through the eyes of the consumer as well.

Creativity can come from all different directions. Taking that into consideration when marketing and advertising is a great strategy for companies. Companies are forced to stay current with the times and to evolve. If they didn’t they wouldn’t survive. Look at the super bowl for example that is the perfect time for some companies that have been in existence for a while to take advantage of. They have millions of people of all different targeted marketing groups watching. Personal perception plays a role in if those people watching really liked or disliked the commercials during the Superbowl. People talk and look forward to the commercials during that game just as much as the game itself sometimes. I don’t think its a fair and justified distinction to say that creativity and strategy is left brain or right brain driven. I feel that creativity and strategy is a group effort and its a process where more then one person contributes ideas and suggestions. Part of being a good advertiser is figuring out who and what works well together and work cohesively. I do think that some people are born with a brain that is wired to be more creative then others. According to a study that was conducted and printed in Forbes magazine: “ A nice side benefit of the research is that it undercuts the common myth that creativity is influenced by being either “left brained” or “right brained”. Instead, is seems clear that creativity involves multiple brain areas across both hemispheres.” ( www.Forbes.com , DiSalvo, David, January 19, 2018, Study Reveals How the Creative Brain is Wired)
