Essay #2
Find one article, a book review, of Maus using online sources. This article should make at least one specific claim about the book. Construct an argument about the claims, noting how effective the overall argument is. You are not writing an assessment of the book. You are not using the article to support a general point about the book or any of the subjects addressed in the book. (Heck, at this point, you may not have even started reading it yet Of course, now is a good time to get started.)

To help you, consider the following questions:
What does the reviewer claim?
How has the reviewer supported those claims?
What definitions are important to understanding the claims?
What appeals to logic or to values do the claims make?
What counterarguments can reasonably be made?
Also – and this is extremely important – you should show that you have read about and learned about important elements of argument, as discussed in your textbook and video lessons.

Research: A single, detailed review of the book (at least 500 words). This is not negotiable. The article must be a developed and detailed review of the novel. You must make a real attempt to quote and paraphrase the source properly (probably at least three direct references). You should also quote from Maus (particularly Part II). Since you will be reading the material for how to construct a Works Cited[1] page around the time this paper is due, you must also include one. I will not count off for an incorrect Works Cited page. I will count off for an omitted one. You should have two source entries on the Works Cited: the review and the book.I will NOT accept reviews or information from Wikipedia or About.com or Yahoo Answers or Shmoop or Spark Notes or anything like them. Don’t even try. If the best source you can find is a personal blog or something off of Amazon or Goodreads, then you are not doing research correctly, and should probably consult with our embedded librarian.Requirements: Include a claim (statement of position). Place the claim in your introductory paragraph. HINT: Your thesis should be a claim you make about the overall effectiveness of the writer’s argument. HINT: You may need to refer to terms about argument you find in chapters 6-8 of The Active Writer in the body/support section of your essay.Purpose: to analyze the effectiveness of the argument.Audience: generalLength requirement: enough to adequately make your casePoint of view: Use third person. Use first person (“I,” “me,” or “my”) sparingly. Do not use second person “you.”Due: See the Calendar[1] See Chapter Ten The Active Writer.
