HIST134 Museum Exhibition River Valley Civilizations Written Assignment
In this module, you have learned a great deal about different River Valley Civilizations, but remember that much of what we think we know about these groups comes from the physical remains we’ve found buried beneath the earth. We then interpret those items to make educated guesses about what they might mean.
In this assignment, you will be “digging” up your own artifacts, analyzing them, and ultimately creating your own virtual museum exhibition using six of the artifacts you collect.
You will begin by completing the HIST 134 Virtual Archaeological Dig. In this activity, you will be prompted to choose a cultural theme (law, military, art, technology, etc.) and explore several dig sites for artifacts that support your chosen theme. Note: This activity is best viewed in Internet Explorer or Chrome.
Note: If you have problems opening the dig, you can also use this link to get to a simpler version of the dig.
Once you have completed the virtual dig, you will draft an outline for your museum exhibit that includes:
A brief introduction to your chosen theme. What is it and why did you choose it?
This introduction must go beyond simply saying that you like a particular topic more than others, or just that you think it’s “important”. Be specific regarding your reasons and why you think this theme tells us so much about a particular culture.
The six artifacts you chose to support the theme. For each:
Include a picture of the artifact (provided in the activity).
Briefly describe the artifact and the time period from which it originates.
Explain how the artifact demonstrates the importance of the cultural theme you chose to pursue in your virtual archaeological dig, using evidence for the module learning activities where appropriate.
