HLSS500 Wk 7 Methodological Issues in Conducting Mixed Methods Research Paper
Responses should be a minimum of 250 words and include direct questions. You may challenge, support or supplement another student’s answer using the terms, concepts and theories from the required readings. Also, do not be afraid to respectfully disagree where you feel appropriate; as this should be part of your analysis process at this academic level.

The mixed method research style is what I have chosen for my research proposal, I have used this before and feel I was pretty successful. Mixed methods research is the combination of at least qualitative and at least one quantitative component in a single research project (Bergman, 2008). This method of research has experienced a sparked an increase in popularity in the social, behavioral, and related sciences in recent years (Bergman, 2008).
The first step in gathering data for my research proposal is to pull from national and international data bases to look at the history of terrorism here in the United states and abroad. For the national data base I would look at using the Uniform Crime Report which is compiled by the FBI (“Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics”, 2019). This report captures data nation wide from 18,000 city, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcements agencies that voluntarily report crimes (“Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics”, 2019). This report goes back to 1930 when it first started to collect crime data from agencies across the nation, by going back this time in our history we can look at how domestic terrorism has been an on going and growing issue throughout the decades. And it may give insight to how these groups continue to operate.
The second organization that I would seek data from is the United Nations and their report the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Like the UCR this report compiles crime data from all countries that belong to the UN, the hope with this report is to strengthen national capabilities between countries in order to stop crime (“Statistics and Data | UNODC”, 2019). Looking at this report would allow researchers to compare data on an international level and compare the issues in the United States to other countries and see how terror groups are allowed to operate and flourish around the world.
The final part of the quantitative research is compiling the significant court cases that have effected search and seizers laws and citizens rights to privacy throughout the years. Each of these rulings have had a significant effect in how law enforcement deals with the public and the citizens right to privacy.
The qualitative research portion of the study is to conduct surveys with law enforcement officials from all agencies and level of law enforcement on the practicality and enforcement of procedures when it comes to dealing with the threat of domestic terrorism. Along with the interviews of law enforcement, surveys need to be conducted with the individuals who have carried out acts of violence, to see why the turned to an organization that promoted this. Were they simply mad at the government, or was it a more personnel issue. By doing this the hope would be to find the root cause for why an individual would commit acts of violence against his or her neighbors.
