Must post first.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCUSSIONS: Your contributions should be thoughtful and developed. Answer all parts of the question and use concepts from the course materials. Use a professional style of communication, with attention to grammar, spelling, and typos; cite the class sources you use. You may use outside sources to find artwork and context. Be sure they are academic caliber. Do not use outside sources for art concepts or tools that you are applying.
AVOID the words “In my opinion,” “to me,” “I think,” “I feel” etc. State your ideas and support with information and concepts from class materials!
Choose ONE of the following questions, and write an in depth response (2-4 paragraphs). Then, give a substantive response to at least one other student.
1. DESCRIBE AND DISCUSS A FAVORITE WORK
Picture and describe a favorite work of visual art. (Heilbrunn Timeline in Additional Resources is a good place to look for for pieces. Or, The Met. Or National Gallery of Art).
Using this week’s class lecture and materials, describe it in critical terms. How does it use space? Light/dark? Line? Form/shape? Color? Texture? Perspective? (terms may vary with the piece). Be thorough.
Where does it fit on the timeline? What style/period/movement is it? What are some of the hallmarks of this style/movement/period & how does this piece exhibit these characteristics? Describe the medium it represents within the scope of visual arts. Tell us about its maker or designer. Dig into the history of the piece what are the ideas behind it? How was this piece received? (Was it representative of ideas of the day? Controversial? Revered? Dismissed?)
Finally, argue its value in relation to ideas from at least two of the assigned learning resources for this week. (Be sure to include a picture for us)!
2. HOUSE OF STYLE
Explore the links provided on various styles of art in the Artistic Styles and Movements section. Pick a work from a certain style of art, and explain, using terms in the Elements of Art lecture, as well as what you know about the subject matter of the piece and/or techniques used in creating it (some styles are defined in part content and/or process), how this piece fits that specific style. Compare it with a different piece from a contrasting style. Some questions you might ask: How does the artist use line, shape/form, space, color texture to embody this style? What is it’s point of view? (Are we strictly observers? Does it move us? Are we looking from the inside out? Is it subjective or does it seek to be objective? Also consider: What is point of this piece? Aesthetic? A moral lesson? Emotion? The process of the artist? Whatever the viewer brings? The point may vary from style to style.
You do not need to answer all of the above questions for #2. Pick several that best fit your piece/style.
A note on responses to classmates these are brief compared to your responses to questions, but they should also contain content from class. Don’t simply say you “agree” or “like” a post!
You will not see other students’ work before posting your own. Do NOT post blank posts or edit any posts. If you would like to add information to your post or even correct typos, respond to yourself.
Posts are due by Sunday by 11:30PM ET. Initial posts should be 2-4 paragraphs, responses to other students at least 2-4 sentences. All posts should include material from this week’s course content. Don’t forget to also post a response to at least one fellow classmates (also due Sunday by 11:30PM ET). Discussion will lock shortly after due date/time.
You must start a thread before you can read and reply to other threads
