MN553 Purdue Topical Agents & Drugs Affecting Gastrointestinal System Paper
Your focus this week is pharmacologic interventions for patients with physiologic and pathologic alterations of the GI system as well as pharmacologic interventions that are topical in nature.
This unit will begin with one of the simplest systems for which you will prescribe. Although it is assumed that the student has an understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the GI system, the unit will begin with a brief overview of the system for which you will be prescribing. This will assist in building a template from which to study. The second part of the unit will describe the use of topically applied agents (skin, eye, ear). A topically applied agent is one that is intended to be used at the site of action without absorption into general circulation.
After completing this unit, you should be able to:
Understand pharmacotherapeutics for treating pathology of the GI system.
Apply principles of pharmacotherapeutics to topical agents.
Discuss drug uses, mechanism of action, contraindications and drug interactions, adverse effects, and monitoring parameters of selected drugs.
