student Esther Sereti Domestic Containment is a theory that women should be at home taking care of the children and men should be working and providing for their families, and that would lead to a more stable environment. in the 1950s women started working because most men were sent to war and women were left to make the firearms and bombs. This was looked at as damaging to the American’s freedom from communism. This was destined to fail because women were become more aware of their capabilities and saw themselves to be more than just housewife. even though there was some value in having at least one parent at home to take care of the children, there was more that the young youth culture felt they can give to the world and so they explored it by “rebelling” the domestic containment.

I don’t know of a single person who doesn’t know who Senator Joseph McCarthy is. The trials that he televised are similar to a modern-day Salem Witch Trial. He used his power and the scare of communism to further secure his power and accuse any opposition as communist conspirators. No one was safe from the eyes of McCarthy, even elite Hollywood professionals fell victim to his witch hunt. Some of the more famous trials was that of the “Hollywood Ten”. The government cracked down on screenwriters and directors who defied the anti-communist crackdown. Most of them received jail time. This was followed by a list comprised by McCarthy of suspected communists, but this soon came to an end when Senator McCarthy started attacking the Army. Thus, the term McCarthyism came to defined as a “practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence.” Because of his list and his trials over 2,000 government employees lost their jobs, and reputations were tarnished.
