Question: On March 11, 2011, a disastrous earthquake and tsunami ripped through the islands of Japan. Known as the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, the Fukushima Tōhoku earthquake produced a massive tsunami that devastated parts of Japan, killing over 15,000 and causing one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.
This megathrust earthquake was a 9.0 magnitude and the fourth largest earthquake on record. The energy released was the equivalent to 8,000 Hiroshima Atom Bombs.
The tsunami was the cause of the large loss of life that resulted from the disaster. Entire towns were destroyed. Just three days after the earthquake, 1,000 bodies had been recovered in the town of Minamisanriku alone. The eventual death toll was over 15,800, with a further 2,500 missing.
The Fukushima Daiichi power plant was inundated by the tsunami. It had not been built to withstand such high waves and this resulted in a cooling system failure, followed by a nuclear reactor meltdown and the release of radioactive materials. In December 2011, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said 45 metric tons of radioactive water had been released into the ocean.
The cost of the earthquake and tsunami is still ongoing to some extent. It is believed to have been the most expensive disaster in history, so far amounting to an estimated $300bn. Further to this, 45,700 buildings and 230,000 vehicles were destroyed. In addition causing long term radioactive destruction and clean up that has shattered the region.
On September 19, 2017, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the capital of Mexico, Mexico City. Initial reports regarding Mexico City expected an increasing death toll that could reach to the thousands of lives lost and damages to property producing an economic impact of between $1 to $10 Billion as a result. It is important to note that thirty-two years earlier Mexico City suffered an 8.1 Magnitude quake that left 10,000 dead and 30,000 injured.
What major recovery issues have these countries dealt with or will deal with in recovering from these devastating events? A great comparison is to look at the effects of the Tsunami and earthquake on Japan versus the Mexico City earthquake.
