SO 338 Biography Of Social Activist Essay
Assignment of Social Activist. In class on March 19, each student will choose an individual (from a list of names) who was/is active in a social movement in the U.S. In addition, one source will be identified to help students begin their library research.
Development of Other Sources of Information. Once you have read the one source provided, you will have a better idea of what kind of information you need and specific terms for searching book, article, and online databases. You will need to develop sources to find more information on the person AND the social movement. You need a good understanding of both.
Biography of the Activist. Provide a brief personal history of the person (when was s/he born? where? info about family and early life, etc.). Then, spend most of the paper examining his/her involvement in the social movement. The paper MUST include, but is not limited to, the following: (1) why s/he got involved? when? where? how? (2) contributions the person made to the cause; (3) the importance of the person to the social movement; (4) consequences to the person of being involved in the social movement; (4) if still alive, what the person is doing now. You may also include other relevant information in the paper. A good biography will give readers a sense of who the person is/was, how and why s/he chose to become a social activist, and his/her activities.
Personal Reactions. At the end of the paper, include your personal reactions/feelings about the person and the social movement. While the body of the paper is a relating of information, this section of the paper is a place for your feelings. Do you admire the person? Could you have done what the person did? etc. What have you learned about yourself while doing this assignment?
