University Of California Apartheid and Tribes in South Africa Research Essay
This is the second part of the 15 page paper.
Thanks for the draft. Good progress. But step back for a moment and question the very premise of “tribe.” This is a very contested term in South Africa, and elsewhere. What are tribes? Did they really exist as described by some analysts? To what extent did the South African apartheid authorities stress “tribalism” as a way of saying that there could be no black majority, but rather a range of small tribal entitities.
As a practical matter, are any tribal names used in MM, e.g. Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, and if so in what circumstances? Can you find through a keyword search of the British Apartheid Archives any references to tribes/tribal etc? What about the TRC? Maybe do a search for such terms as Zulu/Xhosa/Tswana etc?
Stepping back a bit again, what is the intention behind tribe division, separation, playing up a divide and rule policy? If so, how can you document such a process in MM, Trevor Noah, Black Panther etc?
I added the mighty man comics and a document from the British archive, I will look for more on the specific names mentioned.
